Approaching Cyber Safety: Digital Citizenship in Schooling

Approaching cyber safety and digital citizenship in schooling was an important part of my educational journey. Instead of using scare tactics, my teachers took a proactive and educational approach. Through engaging lessons and discussions, they focused on teaching proper online behaviour, privacy protection, and ethical conduct in digital spaces. This approach was incredibly beneficial, as it equipped me with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the digital landscape confidently.

As a future educator, I am passionate about implementing a comprehensive approach to digital citizenship in my classroom. I aim to create a culture where students develop a deep sense of responsibility and empathy in digital interactions. To achieve this, I plan to integrate digital citizenship seamlessly into various aspects of the curriculum. Through hands-on projects, collaborative discussions, and reflective activities, students will explore the nine elements of digital citizenship meaningfully and personally.

For example, students might create digital portfolios, learning
about digital access and literacy while showcasing their skills and achievements. Through discussions about online communication, we'll delve into the nuances of digital etiquette and respectful dialogue. Collaborative research projects will provide opportunities to practice responsible use of digital resources and proper citation techniques.

By weaving digital citizenship into the fabric of our learning experiences, I aim to empower students to become conscientious digital citizens who approach technology with integrity, empathy, and a commitment to positively contributing to their digital communities.
